Syringobulbia-myelia with obstructive sleep apnea

Edward F. Haponik, MD, David Givens, MD and Jean Angelo, MD

Departments of Medicine and Pathology (Dr. Haponik), the Baltimore City Hospitals, the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, MD, and The Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University (Drs. Angelo and Givens), Winston-Salem, NC.

Central nervous system disorders may cause obstructive sleep apnea, but this sleep-related breathing disorder is rarely associated with a structural abnormality of the medulla. We present a patient with obstructive apnea resulting from autopsy-proven syringobulbia-myelia.

Address correspondence and reprint requests to Dr. Haponik, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary Medicine, Baltimore City Hospitals, 4940 Eastern Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21224.

Accepted for publication December 10, 1982.
