Delayed-onset posthemiplegic dystonia

CT demonstration of basal ganglia pathology

J. David Grimes, M.D., Mohamed N. Hassan, M.D., Adele M. Quarrington, M.D. and Joseph D'Alton, M.D.

Divisions of Neurology (Drs. Grimes, Hassan, and D'Alton) and Radiology (Dr. Quarrington), Ottawa Civic Hospital, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

We studied three patients with delayed onset of unilateral involuntary movements after recovery from hemiplegia. In all three cases, CT showed low-density striatal changes, compatible with previous cerebral infarction. These changes involved maximally the putamen and to a slightly lesser degree the caudate. Thalamic atrophy was also seen in all three patients.

Address correspondence and reprint request to Dr. Grimes, 1081 Carling Avenue, Suite 304, Ottawa, Ontario, K1Y 4G2, Canada.

This study was presented in part at the sixteenth Canadian Congress of Neurological Sciences, Calgary, Canada, June 1981.

Accepted for publication February 17, 1982.
