Facial myokymia in the Guillain-Barre syndrome

A clinicopathologic study

Michel Van Zandycke, M.D., Jean-Jacques Martin, M.D., Luc Vande Gaer, M.D. and Paul Van den Heyning, M.D.

Department of Neurology, St. Jan Hospital (Drs. Van Zandycke and Vande Gaer), Brugge, Belgium, and the University of Antwerp, Born-Bunge Foundation (Prof. Martin and Dr. Van den Heyning), Antwerp, Belgium.

We report clinical, electrophysiologic, and pathologic findings in a patient with Guillain-Barré syndrome with facial myokymia. At autopsy, the brainstem appeared normal, but there were focal areas of demyelination in the extra-axial facial nerve. At least in Guillain-Barré syndrome, damage to the peripheral facial nerve may be responsible for the facial myokymia.
