Conjugal motor neuron disease

David Chad, M.D., F.R.C.P. (C), Hiroshi Mitsumoto, M.D., Lester S. Adelman, M.D., Walter G. Bradley, D.M., F.R.C.P., Theodore L. Munsat, M.D. and Irving Zieper, M.D.

Departments of Neurology (Drs. Chad, Mitsumoto, Adelman, Bradley, and Munsat) and Pathology (Dr. Adelman), the Tufts-New England Medical Center, and the Department of Neurology (Dr. Zieperl, Faulkner Hospital, Boston, MA.

We describe a husband and wife with motor neuron disease. The woman had been ill for 10 years with predominantly upper motor neuron signs when her husband developed progressive muscular atrophy. This is the first known report of sporadic motor neuron disease occurring in both partners of a marriage.
