Carbamazepine does not prevent febrile seizures in phenobarbital failures

Peter R. Camfield, M.D., Carol S. Camfield, M.D. and John A.R. Tibbies, M.B., F.R.C.P.

Department of Pediatrics, I.W. Killam Hospital for Children, and Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Carbamazepine was used by 16 consecutive children with febrile seizures who required long-term anticonvulsant prophylaxis, but were intolerant of (10) or uncontrolled by (6) phenobarbital. Compliance with carbamazepine was excellent; however, 13 of 16 had recurrent febrile seizures. Carbamazepine was ineffective for this special group of patients with febrile seizures.
