Carbamazepine was used by 16 consecutive children with febrile seizures who required long-term anticonvulsant prophylaxis, but were intolerant of (10) or uncontrolled by (6) phenobarbital. Compliance with carbamazepine was excellent; however, 13 of 16 had recurrent febrile seizures. Carbamazepine was ineffective for this special group of patients with febrile seizures.
