Acute optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis

Y. Isayama, T. Takahashi, T. Shimoyoma and A. Yamadori

Department of Ophthalmology (Drs. Isayama, Takahashi, and Shimoyoma) and the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry (Dr. Yamadori), School of Medicine, Kobe University, Kobe, Japan.

Acute optic neuritis (ON) with unknown etiology, seen at the Department of Ophthalmology, Kobe University Hospital, was reviewed. A statistical survey of ON revealed severe visual disturbances at the worst periods and a better recovery of visual acuity when compared with other studies. Analysis of clinical features of multiple sclerosis (MS) following ON showed a low rate of dissemination of ON (8.3%), frequent involvement of the spinal cord, and MS with a benign nature.

Address correspondence and reprint requests to Dr. Isayama, Department of Ophthalmology, School of Medicine, Kobe University, Kusunoki-cho, 7-chome, Chuo-ku, Kobe, Japan #650.

Accepted for publication July 2, 1981.
