Transient hyperammonemia in the preterm infant

Neurologic aspects

Patricia H. Ellison, M.D. and Marilyn L. Cowger, M.D.

From the Departments of Neurology and Pediatrics, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI (Dr. Ellison), and the Department of Pediatrics, Albany Medical College (Dr. Cowger) Albany, NY.

Two preterm infants had serum ammonia levels of 2400 and 2800 pg per deciliter and profound neurologic depression with seizures and coma. Both responded to treatment by exchange transfusion and peritoneal dialysis. All previously reported survivors of transient hyperammonemia of the preterm infant have had normal neurologic and developmental examinations on follow-up.

Address correspondence and reprint requests to Dr. Ellison, Director of Neonatal Neurology, Milwaukee County Medical Complex, 8700 W. Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53226.

Accepted for publication August 12, 1980.
